In a significant step toward enhancing choral music in South Africa, the Tiro Mpane Foundation National Choral Eisteddfod (TMFNCE) recently hosted a Conductor’s Masterclass at the prestigious Linder Auditorium at Wits University between 8 – 10 November 2024. This iconic venue, known for its exceptional acoustics and historic resonance, provided the perfect backdrop for an immersive experience in the art of choral conducting.
The masterclass was led by Letlhogonolo Moaisi, Cairperson of the Artistic Committee distinguished all winning conductors from the regional eliminations faccross all three categories and mentors who guided participants through the fundamentals of effective conducting and the intricacies of choral performance. Conductors from various choir groups with various backgrounds attended this masterclass, each eager to refine their craft under expert tutelage as the NCE prepared for the National Finals. Sessions focused on essential elements such as baton technique, vocal blending, score analysis, and the nuanced art of interpreting choral music especially Orchestra Conducting. The emphasis was not only on technical mastery but also on the conductor’s role as an inspirational leader capable of connecting with choir members on an emotional level.
One highlight of the event was an interactive workshop where participants practiced conducting with live Orchestra Performance with voices imitating the songs to be performed at the National Finals. This hands-on approach allowed them to experiment with various conducting styles, receive real-time feedback, and experience the challenge and reward of guiding a cohesive choral performance. Esteemed mentors provided personal insights, sharing their journeys and professional advice on building a successful career in choral music.
